Chalk Fire: 100% Contained
Cause: Under Investigation

Final Update from the Monterey Ranger District

The Chalk Fire started on Saturday, September 27th near Chalk Peak and South Coast Ridge Road in the Monterey County portion of the Los Padres National Forest.  It burned 16,269 acres.  Firefighters contained it on Thursday, October 30th.  No structures were destroyed.



Highway 1 and other roads affected by the fire will continue to have rolling rock and debris. Be cautious while driving on these roads.  Highway 1 may be closed periodically due to rock slides caused by predicted rain.


Basin Complex Fire: 100% Contained

Cause: Lightning

The Basin Complex Fire refers to two fires: the Gallery in the Big Sur area and the Basin near the Carmel Valley and Cachagua areas.  The two fires were started by lightning on Saturday, June 21st.  They merged on Thursday, June 26th.  Combined they burned nearly 163,000 acres and destroyed 26 homes and 32 other buildings.  Firefighters contained the Basin Complex Fire on  Sunday, July 27th.

Indians Fire: 100% Contained
Cause: Escaped Campfire
On Thursday, July 10th firefighters contained the Indians Fire.  It's burning  west of King City in the Los Padres National Forest and the Ventana Wilderness Area.  The fire covered more than 81,000 acres and  destroyed two structures.  The fire was started on Sunday, June 8th by an escaped campfire.


Whitehurst / Hummingbird Fire: 100% Contained
Cause: Lightning
The Hummingbird and Whitehurst Fires were started on Saturday, June 21st by lightning.  The Hummingbird burned nearly 800 acres and the Whitehurst burned 200 acres.  No homes were destroyed.  Firefighters had both fires contained by the morning of Tuesday, June 24th.


Brown Fire: 100% Contained
Cause: Lightning
Lighting started the Brown Fire on Saturday, June 21st.  It burned nearly 3900 acres in the Hollister and Panoche area of San Benito County.  Firefighters had the Brown Fire contained by Tuesday, June 24th.


Trabing Fire: 100% Contained
Cause: Vehicle Exhaust
The Trabing Fire started on Friday, June 20th in the Larkin Valley area of Santa Cruz County, just north of Watsonville along Highway 1.   Firefighters had it contained by  Sunday, June 22nd.  The fire burned 630 acres and destroyed ten homes and ten outbuildings.  At the height of the fire about 2000 people were evacuated from their homes.  The fire was sparked by exhaust from a car.
