What is HD Radio?

HD Radio technology allows KAZU to add up to two additional audio channels to the main analog signal. To listen you will need to buy an HD-compatible radio, available at any electronics or car stereo retailer. Unlike satellite radio or some webcasting services there is no monthly fee.

Wildfire Updates
Basin Complex Fire: 100% Contained
Cause: Lightning


The Basin Complex Fire refers to two fires: the Gallery in the Big Sur area and the Basin near the Carmel Valley and Cachagua areas.  The two fires were started by lightning on Saturday, June 21st.  They merged on Thursday, June 26th.  Combined they burned nearly 163,000 acres and destroyed 26 homes and 32 other buildings.  Firefighters contained the Basin Complex Fire on  Sunday, July 27th.

Closures


  • Effective Friday, August 1 Kirk Creek, Plaskett Creek and Arroyo Seco Campgrounds on the Monterey Ranger District of the Los Padres National Forest will re-open.  However the rest of the Monterey Ranger District, including all forest roads and trails, will remain closed to the public for at least the next several weeks.

  • Several picnic areas on the Big Sur coast along Highway 1 are OPEN, including Pfeiffer Beach, Mill Creek, Sand Dollar Beach, Jade Cove Beach, Willow Creek and San Carpoforo Beach. Camping overnight is prohibited at these sites as are wood campfires and charcoal barbecues.  Gas stoves are permitted.
  • Andrew Molera State Park is open for day use only at the main park entrance on the west side of Highway 1.  The Creamery Meadow, Bluff, Panoramic, Ridge, River trail system and Molera Beach west of Highway 1 are open.
  • Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is open for camping.  The Valley View Trail on the east side of Highway 1 and trails on the west side of Highway 1 are open, as well as the Big Sur Lodge, the campground and the swimming holes within the campground.   
  • Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park has reopened the small parking area and the Waterfall Trail from the parking area to the overlook.  All other park facilities east of Highway 1 will remain closed.
  • Limekiln State Park is open for day use and camping.  Call (831) 667-2403 for further information.
  • For information regarding all other State Parks in the area call Big Sur Station at (831) 667-2315.
  • The Santa Lucia Recreation Residence Tract in Los Padres National Forest is closed to public entry.  Permit holders may contact the King City office of the Monterey Ranger District at (831) 385-5434 for access information


Indians Fire: 100% Contained
Cause: Escaped Campfire

On Thursday, July 10th firefighters contained the Indians Fire.  It's burning  west of King City in the Los Padres National Forest and the Ventana Wilderness Area.  The fire covered more than 81,000 acres and  destroyed two structures.  Homes are no longer threatened.  The fire was started on Sunday, June 8th by an escaped campfire.


Whitehurst / Hummingbird Fire: 100% Contained
Cause: Lightning

The Hummingbird and Whitehurst Fires were started on Saturday, June 21st by lightning.  The Hummingbird burned nearly 800 acres and the Whitehurst burned 200 acres.  No homes were destroyed.  Firefighters had both fires contained by the morning of Tuesday, June 24th.


Brown Fire: 100% Contained
Cause: Lightning

Lighting started the Brown Fire on Saturday, June 21st.  It burned nearly 3900 acres in the Hollister and Panoche area of San Benito County.  Firefighters had the Brown Fire 100% contained by Tuesday, June 24th.


Trabing Fire: 100% Contained
Cause: Vehicle Exhaust

The Trabing Fire started on Friday, June 20th in the Larkin Valley area of Santa Cruz County, just north of Watsonville along Highway 1.   Firefighters had it contained by  Sunday, June 22nd.  The fire burned 630 acres and destroyed ten homes and ten outbuildings.  At the height of the fire about 2000 people were evacuated from their homes.  Most have been allowed to return.   The cause of this fire is under investigation.
