Salinas, CA – When Dennis Donahue campaigned for Mayor of Salinas last fall, he asked residents to imagine what for many of them is unthinkable:

"A city without gangs."

Salinas has been plagued by violence between dueling gangs for some 30 years, and a new wave of shootings this year has many residents on edge. Just last week, the FBI arrested some two dozen suspected gang members in a major operation throughout California - several from Monterey County.

Now, Salinas is knee-deep in a new anti-gang initiative. What's so different about this one? As KAZU's Ben Adler reports, it's emphasizing prevention efforts over law enforcement.
