The Blue Zones Project for Healthier Choices

Three New Blue Zones Project Approved Salinas-based Restaurants with delicious Plant-based Dishes!

Blue Zones Project Monterey County announces that the restaurants Culturas Hidalgo y Oaxaca, Portobello’s and Main Street Bakery and Catering have been named Blue Zones Project-approved Restaurants. This distinction demonstrates their commitment to helping the City of Salinas and its residents achieve healthier lifestyles. Each restaurant expanded their menus to include delicious plant-based items in order to become approved.

“I am thrilled that Culturas Hidalgo y Oaxaca, Portobello’s and Main Street Bakery and Catering have earned this honor to help make healthy choices easier for our community,” said Tiffany Ditullio, Executive Director of Blue Zones Project Monterey County.

Culturas Hidalgo y Oaxaca created an innovative menu showcasing six different Blue Zones inspired dishes. Among the favorite dishes is Tlayuda, a vegan dish featuring a crispy round of flatbread topped with corn truffle, squash blossoms and vegetables.

Portobello’s added new healthful items to their dinner menu. Favorites include their black bean chili, quinoa stuffed bell pepper and a vegetable stack with polenta and grilled veggies.

Main Street Bakery and Catering added plant-based options on their regular and children’s menus including vegetarian breadless burgers, Mexican healthy bowls with cauliflower and soyrizo tacos. During the COVID -19 Pandemic, the restaurant launched a “Pay-It-Forward” Program, raising over $2,500 for meals that where served to community members in need.

“We are delighted to see three family-owned restaurants featuring healthful plant-based options for restaurant goers and foodies alike,” said Genevieve LeBlanc, Food Environment Lead for Blue Zones Project. “They’re making the healthy choice the easy choice while still serving traditional favorites. There is now something on the menu for everyone to enjoy. All three restaurants offer take-out and there is no better time to support our local restaurants than now.”
