Event Description

DWMC hosts Breaking Political Barriers: Emerge California empowers Women to run and win

Democratic Women of Monterey County hosts “Breaking Political Barriers: Emerge California empowers Women to run and win” on Thursday, May 20th from 11:30am to 1:00pm.

Join Emerge California’s Executive Director Melanie Ramil and Northern California Program Director Sierra DeSalvia for a conversation about what it looks like to run for office and win as a Woman.

• What barriers do Women face in the political arena?
• What does it take to overcome these obstacles?

Founded in 2002, Emerge California has recruited and trained over 700 Women to run for Public Office and win. Fifty per cent of their graduates have run for office and 70% won their races. In 2020 they trained over 100 more Democratic Women and had 100 Emerge California Alumnae on the ballot. In 2021 there are over 182 Emerge California Alumnae serving in elected office. Their intensive 6-month, 70-hour training includes instruction on fundraising, field work, campaigning for justice, and communications -- programs are offered in Northern California, Southern California and the Central Valley.

Melanie V. Ramil brings over 14 years of political and government experience with progressive candidates, initiatives and public policy to Emerge California. Ms. Ramil has led and won multiple statewide campaigns, including for United States Senator and 2020 Vice-president Kamala D. Harris. Melanie is a proud daughter of Filipino Immigrants. Her first foray into politics and social change work was sparked by her family’s stories of injustice.

Sierra DeSalvia has dedicated her career to breaking down interpersonal and political barriers. Her background is rooted in mediation, stakeholder engagement, and professional development training. In California, she has focused on promoting Women in leadership, fundraising for nonprofits, and improving local policy.

There is no charge. This event is free and open to the Public.

Registration is required. Once registered, Participants will receive a link to sign into the webinar.
