Gilroy Police Officers Who Responded To Garlic Festival Attack Called "Heroes"

Aug 2, 2019

Gilroy Police released the names of the officers who took down the shooter at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.  This as investigators continue to search for a motive in the deadly attack.

The three officers are indentified as Eric Cryar, Hugo Del Moral and Robert Basuino.  The officers together have more than 50 years experience in law enforcement. They shot and killed the shooter within minutes of him opening fire on a crowd at the Gilroy Garlic Festival this past Sunday.

Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee called the officers, heroes. "I don't think they view themselves that way. I think they view themselves that they were just doing their job. I and I don't think they're particularly excited about being in the limelight. But I certainly think that they deserve recognition for what they did," said Smithee.

Investigators still do not have a motive for the mass shooting that killed three people and injured others.

Special Agent John Bennett says the FBI has brought in experts in digital technology and profilers from around the country. But he says, it is still a slow process.

"Obviously motive can be a very tricky thing. We're interviewing people that knew the suspect.  Finding his online footprint and going through that. Talking to people who he's worked with, his family. It is all, there's not one piece that points to an ideology or motive. It is a very holistic piece," says Bennett. Agent Bennett again ask for anyone with photos, or video or any information to contact the FBI. So far they have received more than 100 responses.
