CALIFORNIA
5:15 p.m.
The California Department of Public Health is reporting, as of June 21, 178,054 confirmed cases of COVID-19. 5,515 people have died from the coronavirus. That is a daily increase of 20 deaths and 4,230 cases. Local health departments have reported 13,476 confirmed positive cases in health care workers and 83 deaths statewide. There have been 3,411,686 tests conducted in California.
SANTA CLARA COUNTY
11:40 a.m.
Santa Clara County is reporting, as of June 21, 3,457 confirmed cases of COVID-19. A total of 152 people have died from the coronavirus. The county says that represents 89 new cases and no new deaths. 60 people are currently hospitalized, 21 of those in ICU. 122,343 patients have been tested for the coronavirus.
MONTEREY COUNTY
3:40 p.m.
SPCA for Monterey County will be offering a free pet food bank in Prunedale this Saturday, June 27. The event will be from 10 - 11 a.m. at Grange Hall. During their Greenfield event last weekend, the SPCA said they helped 142 families and over 500 pets, including cats, dogs, horses, chickens, parakeets, rabbits, and more. Regular food bank events happen at the actual SPCA in Salinas every Wednesday and Saturday between 10 - 11 a.m.
3 p.m.
The Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner says they are continuing to hand out surgical masks to farm workers across the county. Henry Gonzales says so far about 350,000 masks have been handed out to these essential workers.
2:50 p.m.
The Monterey County Office of the Agricultural Commissioner has created credit-card size informational cards for local farm workers. The county says the cards include information about COVID-19 symptoms; how to get tested; and useful phone numbers; all in Spanish. They are being handed out to workers by ag inspectors and advocacy groups. This is part of the county’s efforts to educate ag workers about the coronavirus.
2:40 p.m.
The Monterey County Health Department has provided some insight into the types of calls their COVID-19 hotline has received throughout the pandemic. Over the last three months over 3,500 calls have come into the hotline with almost half of all callers asking about shelter-in-place orders. Other top reasons for calling included to enquire about testing, and to complain about residents or businesses not following health officer orders. More data about the call center can be found here. 11:50 a.m.
The City of Monterey says their parking lots were the fullest they’ve been since statewide shelter-in-place restrictions were eased. The city says Fisherman’s Wharf lot was filled to capacity over the past weekend (June 21 - 22).
11:45 a.m.
The City of Monterey will start introducing a new ‘Pay On Foot’ system at its parking lots and garages this week (June 22 - 26). The first lot to be converted will be the downtown east garage. Customers will be issued a ticket as they enter the garage or lot which they should take with them after they park. Upon returning to their vehicle, customers will pay via parking payment machines that accept both cash and credit cards.
9:50 a.m.
Monterey County is currently reporting 1,291 confirmed cases of COVID-19. This is an increase of 66 cases over a 24 hour period. Fatalities remain at 12 people. A total of 106 people have required hospitalization. 745 people have recovered from the coronavirus. 20,908 tests have been conducted.
9:30 a.m.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium will reopen in July. The aquarium made the announcement this morning (Monday, June 22) after being closed for four months by the COVID-19 pandemic. The aquarium will welcome members and donors back first for four days beginning Thursday, July 9. It will open to the general public the following Monday, July 13. Tickets will only be available online beginning July 1. All health orders will be followed including masks and social distancing. 1.8 million people visit the aquarium each year.
