CALIFORNIA
6 p.m.
The California Department of Public Health is reporting, as of June 10, 139,281 confirmed cases of COVID-19. 4,881 people have died from the coronavirus. That is an increase of 105 deaths and 3,090 cases from the day before. There have been 2,597,647 tests conducted in California.
SANTA CLARA COUNTY
12 p.m.
Santa Clara County is reporting as of June 11, 3,063 confirmed cases of COVID-19. A total of 148 people have died from the coronavirus. The county says this is an increase of 25 cases and 2 deaths since their last report. 59 people are currently hospitalized, 21 in ICU. 96,003 tests have been conducted.
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY
11:40 a.m.
As more businesses and industries in Santa Cruz County begin to reopen from tomorrow (June 12), the county’s health officer is reminding the public that stay-at-home orders are still in place and that non-essential travel is not encouraged. Dr. Gail Newel adds that outdoor activities are the safest type of activities during the coronavirus pandemic, as long as your stick with your household unit.
11:30 a.m.
Large gatherings continue to be a huge concern for Santa Cruz County health officials. The county says they are still registering new COVID-19 cases originating from Memorial Day gatherings. Dr. Gail Newel, the county’s health officer, is encouraging those attending protests or even the upcoming memorial for Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller, to wear face coverings, practice social distancing and stay home if sick. She says large gatherings put the community at risk.
11:25 a.m.
Santa Cruz County is adding 23 newly trained COVID-19 contact tracers to it’s team of 15 established tracers. It’s part of an effort to increase testing and contact tracing locally. Health officials say there’s been a big jump in negative lab test results recently, showing the increase in testing in the county. The county is now also working with the UCSC COVID-19 testing lab to test frontline workers.
11:20 a.m.
Santa Cruz County Health Officer, Dr. Gail Newel, says yesterday (June 10) they saw their greatest ever increase in COVID-19 cases. 10 new cases were reported, according to the county. Newel says she hopes this is just a glitch and not a sign of times to come. She adds it is possible that people are becoming complacent. She is urging the community to continue to practice social distancing, to wear face coverings, to wash hands thoroughly and stay home if sick. Newel says it’s also important for vulnerable populations to stay home.
11:10 a.m.
Santa Cruz County health officials are encouraging the public to check out their COVID-19 modeling and forecasting on their coronavirus data dashboard. The modelling looks at projections on hospitalization and ICU bed usage through June.
11 a.m.
Santa Cruz County health officials say they've been monitoring an increase in COVID-19 cases in communities of color. As of June 11, close to 55 percent of all confirmed coronavirus cases in the county are among Hispanics or Latinos.
9:50 a.m.
Santa Cruz County is reporting, as of June 11, 249 known cases of COVID-19. That is an increase of 8 cases from June 9. Fatalities remain at 2. A total of 34 people have required hospitalization. 197 people have recovered. 10,667 negative lab test results have been recorded.
MONTEREY COUNTY
6 p.m.
There is new information on the future re-opening of the Monterey Sports Center. City Manager Hans Uslar says the city is surveying members to determine how many plan to return. That will determine how many staff to recall. He says the locker room likely will remain closed and the facility will shut down daily mid-day for 3 or more hours for a deep cleaning.
9:45 a.m.
Monterey County is currently reporting 814 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The county says that’s an increase of 23 cases since their last report. Fatalities remain at 11. A total of 515 people have recovered from the coronavirus. 79 people have required hospitalization. 13,087 tests have been conducted.
