California is reporting, as of June 16, 157,015 confirmed cases of COVID-19. 5,208 people have died from the coronavirus. This is an increase of 87 deaths and 3,455 cases from the day before. Local health departments have reported 12,459 confirmed positive cases in health care workers and 76 deaths statewide. There have been 2,997,988 tests conducted in California.
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY
11:30 a.m.
Santa Cruz County is reporting, as of June 17, 269 known cases of COVID-19. This marks an increase of 2 cases from June 15. Fatalities remain at 2. A total of 215 people have recovered from the coronavirus and 34 have required hospitalization. 12,161 negative test results have been recorded.
MONTEREY COUNTY
5:10 p.m.
Last night (June 16), the Monterey City Council approved a 2020-2021 budget. The new budget will take a total of $1.5 million from the city’s reserves for rehiring laid off city staff. $600,000 of which will be used as an incentive to match salary concessions from the various city bargaining units. The 2020-2021 fiscal year begins on July 1.

Nail salons, skin care, cosmetology, electrology, body art, tattoo parlors and piercing services in Monterey County can reopen beginning Friday, June 19. The reopenings were approved by Governor Gavin Newsom and County Health Officer Dr. Edward Moreno. The county says it is essential that businesses take all steps necessary to ensure the safety of workers and customers. This includes developing and implementing a COVID-19 prevention plan. Key business practices include physical distancing, use of face coverings by employees and patrons, frequent handwashing and regular cleaning and disinfecting.

Monterey County is reporting, as of June 17, 1,075 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The county says that’s an increase of 60 cases over a 24 hour period. Fatalities remain at 12. 92 people have required hospitalization for the coronavirus. 622 have recovered. 16,379 tests have been conducted in Monterey County.
