Workers at the Asilomar Hotel and Conference Center will receive back pay while they are furloughed during the coronavirus pandemic. The workers, all members of Unite Here Local 483, were immediately let go when the conference grounds were selected to temporarily quarantine passengers from the Grand Princess cruise ship.
Union staff member Leonard O’Neil says the 110 workers will receive full pay and benefits from March 12, the day they were let go. They will be paid until April 15th. He says, if necessary, a new agreement will be negotiated if the shut down goes beyond that date.
Nineteen passengers from the cruise ship were quarantined at Asilomar for 14 days. The last 12 were released over the weekend. The facility will remain closed under state orders during the pandemic.
The Asilomar Hotel and Conference center is owned by the state of California, but is managed by Aramark.
