As a member of her family group The Staple Singers and as a solo artist, Mavis Staples has used her huge voice to power the Civil Rights Movement and inspire generations. Hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot revisit their intimate discussion of her life and career in celebration of the gospel and soul legend.

Mavis Staples has been singing her whole life. For much of her life she sang with her father and siblings in The Staple Singers. That group provided music for many of Dr. King’s marches at the height of the civil rights movement. In their neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago they counted Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls and Curtis Mayfield as neighbors. Prince treated her like a surrogate mother. Undeniably Mavis is one of our most precious living legends.
