Highway 1 in Big Sur will reopen Friday, two months ahead of Caltrans’ schedule. A section of the roadway at Rat Creek has been closed since late January.

Highway 1 is scheduled to reopen early this summer. A section of the road on Big Sur’s south coast is closed after a debris flow washed out both lanes. The work to repair the damage will begin Monday, March 1.

Monterey County lifted evacuation orders for the areas surrounding the Carmel and River fire burn scars on Friday afternoon. Evaucation orders remain in place for are surrounding the Dolan fire burn scar. On Tuesday, an evacuation order was annouced for those living within and two miles down slope of the Dolan Fire burn scar. Late Tuesday, an evacuation order was issued for those living within and two miles down slope of the Carmel and River fire burn scars. Monterey County issued an evacuation order Thursday morning for the Carmel River Lagoon area. That order was lifted later in the day.

On Friday morning, Santa Cruz County downgraded all of its current evacuation warnings to advisories. Areas around the CZU Lightning Complex fire burn scar were ordered to evacuate Monday morning because of an approaching rainstorm that could have resulted in dangerous debris flows. Evaucations orders were downgraded to warnings on Thursday meaning residents could go home.
