The Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office says arson caused the Bear Fire in Boulder Creek.  The same man accused of looting an evacuated home during the fire now faces arson charges.

Helicopters flying near Carmel River State Beach Wednesday will be carrying boulders and large pieces of redwood trees to the lower Carmel River. The material will create new habitat for the federally threatened steelhead trout.

Firefighters are slowly getting the upper hand on the Bear Fire burning east of Boulder Creek. At 320 acres, it's now 30-percent contained. Some evacuation orders have been lifted, but 300 homes are still threatened. KAZU got a first-hand look at the damage.

Thursday PM Update: The Bear Fire is no 100% contained at 391 acres.  Firefighters will remain on scene for the next few days.  CalFire asks residents to report any possible signs of smoke.

CalFire continues fighting a wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Called the Bear Fire, it's burning in steep terrain that’s hard to access. So attacking the fire from the air has been crucial.

Wind has not been a factor in the Bear Fire burning in the Santa Cruz Mountains between Highway 9 and the Lexington Reservoir.

Update 1:30pm:  The Bear Fire has grown to 200 acres and is still 5% contained.  150 homes are threatened.  


The story of daily newspapers around the country and the Monterey Bay area is that they have been shrinking.  As a result, so has local news coverage. A new non-profit online publication aims to fill that gap.

UPDATE 5:15 PM Monday: CalFire determined the cause of the York Fire to be a cigarette dropped along South Boundary Road. CalFire says it's crucial that everyone stays extra diligent when it comes to fire prevention. The area is very dry. For prevention and safety tips click here

A long-awaited ribbon cutting tomorrow will mark the opening of the new Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge. The bridge on Highway 1 in Big Sur has been closed for eight months after winter storms damaged it beyond repair. This literally divided the community.

update: CalTrans says the bridge will open to the public near the end of the day on Friday, October 13th.

A new bridge is taking shape 100 feet above Pfeiffer Canyon in Big Sur. It has been seven months since winter storms damaged the old one beyond repair and left part of the community stranded.

When the Monterey Jazz Festival kicks off tomorrow, it will be celebrating 60 years of the event.   I recently spoke with Tim Jackson, the artistic director at the Jazz Festival, which supports KAZU.

I started by asking him to take us back to the beginning when local radio disc jockey Jimmy Lyons got it all started.

President Trump’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, inspired protests throughout the Monterey Bay Area Tuesday.  It also raised fears among some local DACA recipients who crossed the border illegally as children.
