‘Becoming Home’ by Sofia Gonzalez Opens at Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History

The Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History will open Becoming Home, a new solo exhibition by textile artist Sofia Gonzalez, on view from June 18 through September 14, 2025. The installation blends environmental science and storytelling through large-scale textile works dyed with native plant materials.

Inspired by the relationship between oak trees and oak apple wasps — a delicate interaction that is both parasitic and symbiotic — Gonzalez’s pieces examine how humans relate to their landscapes and ask what it means to belong to a place.

Gonzalez will offer an artist demonstration on Saturday, June 28, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., giving guests a look into her natural dyeing techniques and creative process.

“Becoming Home embodies the kind of thoughtful, place-based exploration that defines our museum’s work,” said Dr. Rachel M. Miller, Executive Director of the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History. “We are proud to feature a Northern California artist whose work deepens our understanding of the connections between nature, identity, and community — and invites visitors to reflect on their own relationships with place.”

Exhibit features include:

Naturally dyed fiber works using oak galls and native plant pigments
Sculptural installations inspired by interdependence in ecological systems
Reflections on migration, reciprocity, and rootedness in nature
The exhibition is included with general admission. For more information, visit www.pgmuseum.org.

Founded in 1883, the Museum opened its doors among the first wave of natural history museums in America. Naturalists of this era began a national tradition of hands-on science education and nature preservation, a tradition the Museum has continued for over 140 years. The Museum’s mission is to inspire discovery, wonder, and stewardship of our cultural and natural world. We support conservation, scientific literacy, co-curation, and deep learning towards a resilient community and sustainable future. Their work is made possible, in part, by the generosity of the following funders: American Water Charitable Foundation, City of Pacific Grove, Community Foundation for Monterey County, Harden Foundation, Hayward Family Foundation, Helen Johnson Endowment Fund, Monterey Peninsula Foundation, and the Shelby Cullom Davis Charitable Fund. www.pgmuseum.org.
