Carmel Beach Great Sandcastle Contest celebrates 59th anniversary (again!) on Saturday, Sept. 17
CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif., — A late-summer tradition going back decades, the Carmel Beach Great Sandcastle Contest is known for its stunning backdrop, quirky creativity from competitors and fun-loving judges who accept bribes.
It’s not known, apparently, for its arithmetic.
Brought to life by the city of Carmel-by-the-Sea and the Monterey Bay chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the event invites the public to attend the 59th annual event — again.
In reviewing the archives, the contest committee uncovered a counting mixup. After celebrating its 59th anniversary in 2019, the contest will go back in time and do it all over again!
Having fun with the error is in line with the contest’s history — enjoying a beautiful, playful day on the beach.
This year’s contest takes place Saturday, Sept. 17, on the sand between 10th and 12th avenues. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with judging commencing at noon, but participants are encouraged to arrive early to get started.
Competitors will be asked to create a sand sculpture, architectural or otherwise, from any era they choose from Carmel Beach’s past (historic or prehistoric — think deep sea creatures). Awards include the Golden Shovel (Best of Show), the Sour Grapes Award (often referred to as the runner-up), and Best Theme Award.
Children and school groups should be prepared to answer the challenge as a novel local history project. There will be a Best Kids Award and a participant plaque for every youngster who helps with an entry.
Anyone interested in building a castle can enter the contest. And because bribery (non-monetary) is encouraged, it's not unusual to see platters of food, bottles of wine, chair massages and other indulgences being offered to those in charge.
