Veterans Day Open Mic and Pizza

Veterans Day Open Mic and Pizza

Veterans For Peace Chapter 46 will celebrate Veterans Day, remembering its original name—Armistice Day—with two events.

On Tuesday, November 11th, an Open Mic program will be held at the Monterey Peace and Justice Center in Seaside from 5 pm to 7 pm. The public is invited to share a brief story, a poem, a reflection, a favorite quote, or a song to sing. Free event. Enjoy pizza and non-alcoholic drinks.

The event follows a "Reclaim Armistice Day" Peace Vigil at Window on the Bay in Monterey, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Bring a sign, a peace flag, or a bell.

An act of Congress designated November 11th as “Armistice Day” in 1938, a day dedicated to the cause of world peace, and marking the armistice that ended World War I. But in 1954, amid another war, President Eisenhower signed a bill into law renaming it “Veterans Day” - shifting the focus from peace to war.

Veterans For Peace has taken the lead in restoring the original (and forgotten) intention of November 11th as a day on which we "... reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain."

Sponsored by Veterans For Peace Chapter 46 and the Peace Coalition of Monterey County.
