Walk of Remembrance, May 11th

Walk of Remembrance events will start at 11:00am at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History with a story hour, a documentary screening, and a rally at 1:00 PM, followed by a performance by the Monterey Bay Lion Dance Troupe. The Walk itself will depart the Museum at 1:15 PM and wind .8 miles along the coastal recreation trail to Hopkins Marine Station, where the village once stood. It is recommended that anyone who wants to do only the first part of the Walk to park a car near Hopkins to shuttle back or head home afterwards.

When Gerry Low Sabado and her husband Randy started the Walk of Remembrance in collaboration with the PG Museum in the spring of 2011, it was with the hopes that she could honor her family. Gerry, a descendent of Quock Mui, the first Chinese-American woman born in California, began the Walk of Remembrance as a peaceful way to remember the residents of the Fishing Village at Point Alones who had been burned out of their homes and forced to flee the area in 1906. A mile-long walk between the Museum and the area where the village stood at the current Hopkins Marine Station, the Walk has come to symbolize Gerry’s message of changing minds through kindness and has grown to reach a variety of communities in the ensuing years.

Co-sponsored by the newly established Quock Mui Foundation and the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History, the 11th Annual Walk of Remembrance will be held on Saturday May 11th and will serve as a way to honor and remember the members of the Fishing Village and their descendants, including Gerry, and celebrate the impacts and contributions of Chinese and AAPI Americans on the Monterey Peninsula and beyond.

“'May 16, 2024 is the 118th anniversary of the burning of the Pt. Alones / Pt Almeas Chinese fishing village once located in Pacific Grove” says Randy Sabado, Chair of the Walk of Remembrance Committee and President of the Quock Mui Foundation. “Please help celebrate AAPI Heritage month by attending several events which honor and remember the sacrifices and contributions that the Chinese community has made and continues to make to the Monterey Bay area."

“We have been honored to support the Walk of Remembrance for all these years” says the Pacific Grove’s Museum’s Executive Director Rachel Miller “and are pleased to continue working with the Quock Mui Foundation to remember and celebrate the lives and work of Gerry and descendants of the Chinese Fishing Village. From its initial beginnings and post-covid, the walk has grown to a 300-person strong event, and we are proud to be a part of its history.”

The second weekend in May will see several events leading up to and following the Walk of Remembrance put on by the Quock Mui Foundation with generous partners including the Monterey Bay Aquarium and California State Parks. All events in the series are free but space is limited, and interested parties are asked to sign up via their Eventbrite page.

About the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History

In 1883, the Museum opened its doors among the first wave of natural history museums in America. Naturalists of this era began a national tradition of hands-on science education and nature preservation, a tradition the Museum has continued for over 140 years. The Museum’s mission is to inspire discovery, wonder, and stewardship of our natural world. It envisions a community of curious minds, engaged in discovering the natural heritage and cultural legacy that exist today on the Central California Coast. The Museum is a catalyst for conservation and a valued learning resource in this region, facilitating active inquiry for all ages. The Museum is open to the public Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm.
