Crowds gather at Pebble Beach Golf Link's 17th hole during the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Dylan Music (DM): Yesterday, the 78th U.S. Women's Open concluded at Pebble Beach. KAZU's own Jonathan Linden joins me here in the studio today. He's giving us a recap of the events. Can you give us a picture, Jonathan, of what you saw on the course yesterday... the weather, the tournament, the vibe?

Jonathan Linden (JL): It was absolutely beautiful yesterday. The first two days of the tournament, on Thursday and Friday, it was pretty overcast, with lots of clouds. But in the last two days, it cleared up. It was nice and sunny. The winds were intense on Saturday. It definitely affected play for a lot of the women golfers. But yesterday was pretty perfect golfing conditions; winds didn’t go over ten miles per hour for the most part. So a great round of play.

DM: And Jonathan, let's find out who was able to take it all yesterday.

JL: Allisen Corpuz of Hawaii took home the Harton S. Semple trophy after a very impressive final round yesterday. Allisen Corpuz is also a University of Southern California grad, by the way. Corpuz finished the tournament nine under par and had six birdies and three bogeys in the fourth round. What's impressive about Corpuz's win is that this is her first professional win ever. She's never had a win on the LPGA Tour, and this is only her second year on the tour. So it's very exciting for her. It's exciting to see where she'll go. Speaking with the press after her win, Corpuz said her mind was racing.

Allisen Corpuz: This is really a dream come true, and it was something I dreamed of, but at the same time, kind of never really expected to happen. So just trying to take it in and enjoy the moment.

DM: And what about Monterey's own Mina Harigae? How did she fare during the fourth round of the open, Jonathan?

JL: Well, unfortunately, Harigae did have a tough fourth round at Pebble. Through the 17th hole, she was two over par. And unfortunately, things did get worse on the 18th hole. Her first shot landed on the beach to the left of the tee, and she had to re-tee at the start of the hole. And she ended up getting a double bogey on the 18th hole. Despite the tough ending, though, Harigae said she was grateful for the experience that she had at Pebble.

Mina Harigae: It was a great week. It was cool to see the home crowd come out and support. It was just really special to have a major championship in my hometown.

JL: Harigae finished eight over par overall and tied for 33rd place.

DM: Jonathan, did you also get to speak with fans? What were you hearing? Anything else you want to share with us about it?

JL: I got to speak to a lot of fans and folks that I spoke to who had come down from the Bay Area. So it was great to see them out there. A lot of fans were just so happy to see these women players playing at such an iconic course. Pebble Beach is very renowned within the golf community... people were just excited to see them there. And for those of you who were not able to make this year's U.S. Women's Open, the tournament will be coming back in 12 years. So it will be a little bit. But look out for the tournament coming back in 2035.

DM: 2035, okay, not too long. It will fly by. KAZU's own Jonathan Linden, thank you for joining me in the studio today for this recap.

JL: Thanks, Dylan.
