The Moss Landing battery fire, seen here from Struve Road on Friday Jan. 17, 2025, was near several large commercial farms and Elkhorn Slough, a sensitive estuary ecosystem home to endangered species like the California sea otter.

In today's newscast: as environmental testing continues in the area surrounding the recent battery fire in Moss Landing, the Elkhorn Slough Foundation says there may be fraudulent fundraising efforts underway.

And the Santa Cruz Sheriff's office becomes the first in the state to implement the CAREAlert program, which gives officers a heads-up about mental health challenges that may affect a person's interactions with law enforcement.
