Local students accompany World Cup players
The FIFA World Cup continues, but for a group of local kids, the best part is almost certainly over.
Eleven Freedom Elementary School students got to walk onto the field at Levi’s Stadium holding the hands of players for a match last week.
Franco Salinas Raygoza, 9, says going to the World Cup was his dream.
“ I felt excited and just grateful that I was picked for such a once in a lifetime experience,” he said.
The school chose the students in partnership with the nonprofit America SCORES.
He and other students waited in the greenroom, met the mascots, and paired up with the teams from Austria and Jordan.
“ The player I was with, I got to talk to him, and he was playing around with my hair in the tunnel.”
Raygoza says he was nervous, but excited.
“The energy was just chaos," he said, "yelling and screaming.”
The students stayed for the game. But Franco’s mom, Zaida, saw her son’s amazed face on TV.
“ I think he lived the dream for many, many of us,“ she said.
Study warns of major earthquake within 30 years
A major earthquake in Southern California is more likely than ever, a new study has found.
Scientists say tectonic stress along the San Andreas and San Jacinto faults has reached a 1,000-year high.
“The odds of a 6.5 or greater in the next 30 years is like 95%," said Kate Scharer of the U.S. Geological Survey. "So we should certainly expect to experience large earthquakes in our lifetimes.”
It’s a question of when, not if.
Scharer and other experts say you should start preparing now.
