Erika Mahoney joined KAZU Public Radio in 2016. Her story, "Reality of Possible Separation Sets in for American Children of Undocumented Parents" won a National Edward R. Murrow Award in 2018 for 'Excellence in Writing.'

Erika studied Broadcast Journalism at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. She interned for CBS Sunday Morning in New York City. After graduating, Erika spent four years working as a TV reporter in Upstate New York and on the Central Coast of California. 

Erika's passion for journalism and public radio began in high school when she worked for an independent community radio station in her hometown of Boulder, Colorado. Erika loves living in the Monterey Bay area with her partner and orange tabby cat. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, swimming, yoga and painting.

Monterey County is joining a lawsuit over the 2020 U.S. census. The lawsuit aims to stop the Trump Administration from asking about citizenship status in the upcoming nationwide population count.

It’s always a busy and long day for campus police. Now, recreational marijuana is legal in California. But don’t expect the new law to change this event.

On Wednesday, supporters of the grassroots group Public Water Now gathered to celebrate a victory. Volunteers collected more than enough signatures to get their initiative on the ballot. So come November, voters will once again decide whether they want to explore a public takeover of the Monterey Peninsula’s private water system.

Located in the heart of the Salinas Valley, Greenfield used to be known as the Broccoli Capital of the World.  Now the small town is banking its future on cannabis.  Greenfield has 11 marijuana grow facilities going up over the next two years.

A growing number of communities in California are becoming their own electricity providers by creating what’s called a Community Choice Energy non-profit, or CCE. The goal is to provide greener electricity at a lower cost.

Monterey County is the latest county in California to declare a hepatitis A outbreak among its homeless population. California has been dealing with its largest hep A outbreak since the vaccine came out more than twenty years ago.

Last year, 18 victims of human trafficking called a hotline at the Monterey County Rape Crisis center looking for help. The Monterey County District Attorney’s Office says this represents just a fraction of the problem in the county. So they’re trying out a new way to find these victims.

Monterey County’s fracking ban stands, but voters won’t be getting all they hoped for when they passed Measure Z last year. Late Thursday, Monterey County Superior Court Judge Thomas Wills issued a split decision on the ballot measure.
