Republican candidate George W. Bush, the frontrunner for more than a year in the presidential campaign, saw his lead suddenly disappear after the conventions this summer and has yet to recover his edge. So, today in Michigan, Bush said he was ready to make a few changes in his campaign style and negotiate some debate details with the campaign of Democratic rival Al Gore. Steve Inskeep reports for NPR News.

Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush campaigned again today in Florida, but his appearances were dominated by questions about a television ad being run by his party. The ad includes the word "rats," which appears on screen for less than one second, while the ad is talks about government bureaucrats. Bush said today the ad was not an attempt to send a subliminal message, but he added that it would not air again. NPR's Steve Inskeep is traveling with the Bush campaign and filed this report.

John Ydstie of NPR News has a report on the differing budget proposals of Democratic Presidential Candidate Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush. Economic prosperity in America has brought a sharp debate over what to do with a projected budget surplus. Gore says his first priority is paying down the national debt. Bush says the surplus should mean tax cuts first.

NPR's Phillip Martin reports on this week's NAACP National convention in Baltimore. After years of sagging influence, the organization is now returning as a political player. Presidential candidates Al Gore and George W. Bush addressed the convention, as did President Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Throughout the meetings, members worked to set the organization's future agenda, which includes a moratorium on the death penalty and establishing coalitions with other civil rights groups.

NPR's Charlayne Hunter-Gault reports from George, South Africa. This morning, the two-day-old trial of former President P.W. Botha was suspended until June. Botha is charged with refusing to comply with a subpoena to testify before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Prosecutors at the trial also have been submitting evidence about alleged state-sanctioned human rights offenses committed during Botha's term as president.

From member station W-B-U-R, NPR's Tovia Smith reports that as excavations continue on Boston's Harbor Tunnel project, archeologists are nearing the place where colonists dumped tea into the harbor 222 years ago. They hold out a chance that they may find the wooden tea crates still in place. The dumping site of the tea crates was in deep waters two centuries ago but today it's solid landfill.
