The potential impact and effects of Artificial Intelligence on the future of democracy is the focus of a public panel discussion presented by Community Television of Santa Cruz County and Santa Cruz Public Libraries.

The discussion will feature County Supervisor Zach Friend, Assistant County Administrative Officer Elissa Benson, and longtime local journalist Wallace Baine, reporter with Lookout Santa Cruz.
Discussion topics will include:
Manipulation of public opinion. AI-powered algorithms can be used to manipulate social media platforms, spreading misinformation, and influencing public opinion.
Concentration of power. The use of AI in governance can reinforce existing power structures.
AI and elections. Concerns for AI and elections include: Manipulation and tampering, especially through the use of “Deep Fake” videos.
How can AI improve government access and accountability?
What can we do to counteract misinformation?
