Birdability Field Trip: Elkhorn Slough
By early to mid-August, southbound shorebird migration is well underway at Elkhorn Slough. Adult shorebirds have been arriving for several weeks, and increasing numbers of juveniles begin appearing as the month progresses.
Elkhorn Slough is an Important Bird Area with extensive tidal mudflats that provide critical habitat for a wide variety of birds. A lovely native garden welcomes us. Then, we will use the ADA-accessible trail loop from the Visitor Center to the overlook platform, where participants can comfortably observe and listen for birds in both the upland habitat and the slough below.
