Alliance On Aging is beginning the new year with a renewed commitment to serving older adults throughout Monterey County, expanding access to essential services while strengthening programs that protect dignity, independence and connection. As part of its January initiatives, the nonprofit is also launching a countywide Valentine’s Day outreach designed to bring connection and kindness to seniors who may experience isolation during the winter months.
Alliance On Aging provides a wide range of free and low-cost services that support older adults, caregivers and families at every stage of aging. Core programs include the Ombudsman Program, which advocates for residents in long-term care facilities; Medicare counseling and benefits assistance through HICAP; Senior Peer Counseling; tax assistance from IRS-certified volunteers; transportation navigation; and educational and wellness programming through The HUB.
“Each new year is an opportunity to reaffirm our responsibility to older adults in our community,” said Michael “MJ” Donohue, executive director of Alliance On Aging. “Our mission is rooted in ensuring seniors are not only supported, but seen, heard and valued. That commitment guides everything we do.”
A central focus this January is Alliance On Aging’s Valentine’s Day Card Campaign, an annual community effort that invites residents, schools, families and businesses to create handmade Valentine’s cards for seniors living in care facilities across Monterey County. The cards are collected and personally delivered by Alliance On Aging staff and volunteers, offering a simple but meaningful reminder that seniors are remembered and cared for.
“Loneliness can be especially pronounced during the winter months,” Donohue said. “A handwritten card may seem small, but for someone who rarely receives mail or visitors, it can make a profound difference. This campaign is about human connection.”
Community members are encouraged to participate by creating Valentine’s cards with uplifting messages. Cards may be simple or decorative and can include handwritten notes, drawings or creative touches. Completed cards must be received by Feb. 7 and may be dropped off or mailed to Alliance On Aging, 247 Main St., Salinas, CA 93901.
In addition to the Valentine’s Day outreach, January marks the start of new winter classes and programming at The HUB, Alliance On Aging’s community space offering opportunities for learning, connection and healthy aging. The organization is also encouraging community members to become involved through volunteering, membership or planned giving, all of which help sustain services year-round.
Alliance On Aging serves thousands of older adults annually throughout Monterey County and remains committed to ensuring that aging is met with respect, advocacy and access to vital resources.
