Botanical Illustration: Hummingbird Sage

Botanical Illustration: Hummingbird Sage

Join "Art of Nature" exhibit artist Erin Ellis for an immersive botanical illustration workshop focused on the beauty and complexity of Hummingbird Sage. Found growing right outside the Museum, this fragrant native plant offers a perfect subject for slowing down and observing the intricate details of the natural world.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to Hummingbird Sage, exploring its role in local ecosystems, including its relationships with pollinators, moth species, and its ethnobotanical significance. Participants will then be guided step-by-step through drawing the plant, learning approachable techniques to break down its unique shapes and textures. Working from live plant material, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of plant structure by closely observing and even gently deconstructing specimens. The majority of the session will focus on drawing, with time dedicated to adding color using watercolor or colored pencil.

This workshop is designed for all skill levels and emphasizes curiosity, observation, and building confidence in drawing from nature. Participants will leave with new skills, a deeper appreciation for native plants, and their own botanical illustration to take home.
