Community Science Workshops in Greenfield, Watsonville and Salinas exploring the World through Science and creating Projects of Imagination

COMMUNITY SCIENCE WORKSHOPS

CSWs are spaces where neighborhood kids can go to freely explore the world through science and create the projects of their imaginations. Founder, Dan Sudran, sparked the idea in his San Francisco Mission district garage shop in 1991. Sites in seven cities now follow his model with others preparing to open. CSWs are committed to providing the space, time, materials, and inspiration for underserved kids to pursue the objectives of their innate curiosity. Families can adventure together with ease and walk away with great little science projects and more understanding of the way the world works.

GREENFIELD COMMUNITY SCIENCE WORKSHOP

Greenfield’s mission is to inspire kids and communities with the wonders of nature and the physical world through a free public space full of tools, materials and fascinating exhibits. We are a dynamic and innovative resource for learning with diverse paths to access. We are proud to offer this world-class resource to our community and others who would like to create similar spaces.

WATSONVILLE ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE WORKSHOP

The Environmental Science Workshop is a a unique community resource that engages in hands-on science concepts, while gaining an appreciation for how surplus materials can be kept out of the landfill and re-used in creative and exciting ways. The Workshop creates environments where young people explore science by tinkering and becoming authors of their own educational experiences. Materials and tools are provided and the program is free.

SALINAS COMMUNITY SCIENCE WORKSHOP

Salinas is the newest CSW, established in May 2021 and ready to serve kids as they emerge from their COVID seclusion. We’re putting non-virtual science construction magnificence in front of Salinas kids using mostly scrap and recycled materials, and with that putting them in charge of their own educations. We’ll also work with neighboring schools and slowly expand our offerings of programs and events.

“The SCSW puts the tools of science into kids’ hands,” said Science Workshop Director Curt Gabrielson. “At our programs, kids are free to use tools and build the projects of their imaginations with a wide range of material. Common projects are woodworking, bicycle repair and modification, basic electronic circuits with hobby motors, lights and speakers, and magnetic toys.” A variety of exhibits and specimens are also on display for students to observe and learn from on their own initiative. Garden boxes, planters and animals complete a “rich environment in which to explore and discover,” Gabrielson said. “In the near future, we plan to open for the local community of families and students during out-of-school times,” Gabrielson said. “It is our vision to expand and serve all children of Alisal and then greater North Monterey County.”
