On August 6th and 9th, the world will commemorate the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. The public is invited on August 5th to gather at Lovers Point Cove in Pacific Grove to honor those who suffered and still suffer from the effects of this devistating occurance. This moving ceremony reaffirms the imperative for global nuclear weapons abolition and prohibition so that such a tragedy is never repeated.

This free event is respectful, inclusive and free of cultural appropriation.

Schedule:
7:00 pm: Lantern making and performance of Monterey’s Taiko Drumming Group, Shinsho-Mugen Daiko.
7:45 pm: Music, poetry, and brief stories and messages of hope and peace.
8:15 pm: Launching of the peace lanterns. Tai-Chi Master Jim Scott-Behrends playing Japanese bamboo shakuhachi flute while the peace lanterns, affixed to rafts, are pulled serenely on the cove waters by kayakers.
