Concert Four is “Santa Lucia.” The concert features Pianist Orli Shaham for the Robertson as well as Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466 by Mozart.

Concert Five is “Loma Prieta.” At the center of this concert, like the center of the quake that disrupted so many lives, is music about loss. It is an elegiac program -- Adolphus Hailstork’s “Epitaph to a Man Who Dreamed” honors Martin Luther King, Jr., The “Britten Serenade for Tenor, Horns, and Strings” is about ephemerality, night, sleep, and dreams, Arvo Pärt’s “Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten” is written in memory of Britten, and the Vaughan Williams “Symphony No. 3, Pastoral” is about fallen soldiers in World War I.

The Season closes with “Pinnacles.” Austro-Bohemian Composer Gustav Mahler wrote the “Symphony No. 5” during his brief courtship of Alma Schindler in 1901 before their marriage in 1902 and dedicated the symphony to his “Dear Amscherl,” his nickname for his Wife. The symphony has moments of cragginess and melancholy but finishes with ebullient moments of joy and celebration.
