Snowy Plover Guardian Program 2023 - Virtual Kickoff and Interest Meeting

Snowy Plover Guardian Program 2023 - Virtual Kickoff and Interest Meeting

Learn about the Western Snowy Plover, Monterey's most adorable shorebird, and what you can do to help aide in its survival!

Join our Snowy Plover Guardian Virtual Kickoff this Thursday, March 2nd at 7pm. Details online at: www.MontereyAudubon.org/snowy-plovers

Do you like spending time at the beach? Enjoy engaging with the public? Want to make a difference in the survival of California's most adorable shore bird?

Become a Snowy Plover Guardian Today!

The goal of the Western Snowy Plover Guardian Program is to monitor and minimize disturbances to Western Snowy Plovers (WSP) on our beaches. This non-enforcement volunteer position helps with monitoring habitat and observing conditions that may affect the WSP breeding and wintering sites. This includes speaking and interacting with the public and providing them with educational materials and information.

Volunteers will help Monterey District staff meet the goals of reducing negative impacts to the WSP and their habitat, primarily through public outreach.

We are looking for volunteer assistance at several priority sites spread across different local beaches including Monterey State Beach, Fort Ord Dunes State Park, Marina State Beach, Salinas River State Beach, Moss Landing State Beach, Zmudowski State Beach, and Carmel River State Beach.

Volunteers who contribute 200 hours (about 17 hours/month) receive a statewide annual day-use parking pass! The annual pass is valid for one calendar year, and it allows the Volunteer free day-use access at most of California’s State Parks!

Email us at Volunteer.Monterey@parks.ca.gov to learn more!

The Snowy Plover Guardian Program is a collaboration between the Monterey Audubon Society (@montereyaudubon) and California State Parks.
