If you were not at our August meeting or didn’t read the notes from it, I want to be sure you know about Sun Day, September 21, 12:00-5:00, Mission Plaza Park.

Our CCL chapter and Santa Cruz Action Network are doing the heavy lifting for organizing this event.  Instead of a September social picnic that we had imagined for our chapter, we are having a city-wide celebration of sun (and wind) power, not as “alternative energy,” but as the basis upon which we provide for our present needs and power into the future.  Bill McKibben floated the idea for Sun Day in January of this year, and now hundreds of towns and cities are planning events on September 21, the autumnal equinox.  We’re throwing a city-wide party.  Our event will offer resources for learning how each of us can implement the transition to solar-based living, along with demonstrations of solar energy for practical applications, as well as solar centered art projects for all ages, not to mention astrological sun sign insights and everything you wanted to know about the solar system.  Two or three bands will keep the party going, and we’ll have an open mic for kids (first) and adults who want to share something sunny. This event will be commercial free—nothing to buy or sell.  We will have free cookies and vegan snacks while they last. We’re suggesting people bring a picnic and make an afternoon of it.

Planning and implementing an event like this takes lots of people pitching in. At the moment, only a few of us are doing that work, and we need help!  How could you help?

Here are some things you could do:

Volunteer for setup at 10:30 a.m.
Help plan and staff CCL’s table
Publicize this event on social media (even if you only have a few followers)
Help Andrew at the tablers' parking lot across the street before the event begins
Help keep Sunday attendees out of the church parking lot noon-3 p.m. (Could use three people to each take 1 hour)
Volunteer for an hour of bicycle security (there will be bike racks). We'll need at least 4 of you.
Be the greeter who helps identify CCLers at the event and gives them a name tag
Make table signs in advance and distribute them to every table on the day of
Make other kinds of signs (cookie table, first aid table, etc.)
Help at Christy's electricity for kids table (a CCL member)
Staff the sun prints table (it has all the materials but needs people to help make the art)
Make suggestions for someone (or volunteer yourself) to create a sun poems table where kids and adults write and illustrate poems about or inspired by the sun that they can read at open mic.
Find us an extroverted astrologer (we already have an extroverted astronomer)
Volunteer to be the water monitor (filling up the water dispenser when needed)
Find us some sponsors (we have great PR materials to send to people and businesses, and we need to finance this!)
Put this event in your calendar right now
Invite a few friends to come with you and bring a picnic
Send out invitations far and wide
Loan your pop-up tents or tables
Volunteer for clean up at 5 p.m.
MAKE A DONATION PLEASE!!   We are collecting donations through Santa Cruz Climate Action Network. Please put Sun Day in the PayPal note section.  Even the smallest amount will be extremely appreciated!

If you’ve got an idea for a resource or activity that should be at this event, please let me know at Citizensclimatelobby.sc@gmail.com

Or if you just have a question, give me a call at 831-840-4176

We are one month away from Sun Day with still lots to do!

Thank you for leaning in.
Lynda
