Marina Earth Day rings in 20 years

Roughly 400 people and 30 sustainability-minded organizations rang in the 20th anniversary of Marina Earth Day on Saturday. Marina Mayor Bruce Delgado was bouncing between the crowd and microphone calling out raffle winners.

"Everything we use comes from the environment and if we don't take care of it, we lose our support system," said Delgado. "If you love humans we gotta take care of the environment 'cause there wouldn't be any humans if it wasn't for a healthy environment."

He said 150 volunteers helped make the zero-waste event happen. Volunteers lead community service activities like native plant propagation and invasive species removal for the first two hours which was followed by live music and hands-on activities.

"If you get your hands dirty, you get on your hands and knees and you help the planet, and then you celebrate the planet—that combination of sort of serve first—and then get a free lunch, dance, music, festival. That one, two combination makes this a really special event."

Earth Day falls on April 22nd each year to raise awareness about environmental issues.

A bill to ban ICE agents from polls or daycares advances

Democratic Assemblymember Anamaria Avila Farias introuced a bill to prevent armed agents and officers from being stationed within 100 feet of a polling place or daycare. Our newsroom partner CapRadio reported that the bill was approved by the Assembly Elections Committee last week and heads next to the Assembly Public Safety Committee.
