Monterey County update
The Monterey County Government Center in Salinas is reopening today. It closed unexpectedly more than two weeks ago following what the county called a sewer line malfunction.
During repair work for that, contractors found the sprinkler and fire suppression system also needed attention before the building could reopen.
While no county services were interrupted, some offices were temporarily moved.
The board of supervisors will hold today’s meeting in the chambers as usual
Brookdale post office closing
A Santa Cruz Mountain town is facing permanent closure of its post office. Two years ago, the Brookdale post office was destroyed in a fire. Since then, residents have had to go to Boulder Creek.
Some local residents are demanding the U.S. Postal Service find a permanent home in Brookdale and they’ve got support from Central Coast Rep. Jimmy Panetta, D-Carmel Valley.
"We wanna make sure that they hear from us loud and clear that they should not close the Brookdale Post Office," said Panetta, "and at a minimum make sure that they find other areas in Brookdale for mail services."
In a statement to KAZU, the Postal Service says the Brookdale landlord did not make necessary repairs after the fire and has not been in touch since the post office lease ran out.
In order to formally close the old post office and permanently relocate services, the Postal Service says it has to conduct a study. It will share that publicly once it’s completed, no later than April.
