In today's newscast:

Santa Cruz County’s second annual Week Without Driving is underway

The event is put on by Cruzin’ Together Santa Cruz County and runs through Oct. 8. The goal is for folks to better understand what everyday travel is like for nondrivers.

Metro Boardmember Rebecca Downing says participating firsthand is an important part of the challenge.

"We hope the lessons learned by our public officials will influence their choices when it comes to prioritizing pedestrian infrastructure in their funding and their planning and when they build," said Downing.

Downing hopes the exercise will inspire drivers to be more mindful of the safety of others when the week is through.

“We just want folks during the Week Without Driving that have to drive, to slow down, look up and look ahead — just make space for folks to get where they need to go safely," said Downing.

For those who still need to get behind the wheel, Downing says participating can be as simple as being more aware on the road.

The Week Without Driving’s kickoff event happens Oct. 2 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Capitola Mall. Attendees will have the chance to ride bicycles and learn more about public transit.

Garcia has also been with the agency for decades and became an officer in 2001. He has served as deputy chief since 2020.

Garcia was appointed to his new role by City Manager Matt Huffaker and his first day as interim chief is Oct. 31.
