Housing forum for city of Monterey Elections
A candidate forum for the three city of Monterey races will happen tonight. At 6:30 p.m., seven candidates will gather at Monterey High School to answer questions about housing.
The event is being put on by YIMBY Monterey Peninsula. Kent Glenzer is a co-lead for the group.
"We felt that the housing challenge in Monterey was substantive enough that it would be wonderful for voters and for citizens to get more in-depth answers from the candidates," said Glenzer.
Three questions have already been distributed to the two mayoral and five City Council candidates.
Glenzer says seeing the potential electeds interact with each other is important because, "this question of housing it's a citywide issue, and it's gonna demand collaboration between all the districts."
To meet state requirements, Monterey needs to build more than 3,600 new housing units by 2031.
Tonight’s event is not ticketed.
2027-28 FAFSA opens
The window to apply for college financial aid opened Oct. 1. Over the past 20 years, average yearly tuition costs have nearly doubled, according to the Education Data Initiative.
Daisy Gonzales heads the California Student Aid Commission. She says filling out a FAFSA is critical, especially since family income could qualify students for a state CalGrant.
"California is also one of the few states to create a middle-class scholarship," said Gonzalez. "And it also funds middle class families this year through the state budget. The state will cover 23% of the total cost for a middle-class family."
The deadline to apply for financial aid in California is March 2nd.
