In today's newscast:
Teen Kitchen Project milestone
The Teen Kitchen Project has served its one-millionth meal.
The nonprofit teaches teenagers how to prepare medically-tailored meals for people in Santa Cruz County living with serious illnesses.
Founder and CEO Angela Farley said the program is changing some teens’ habits at home, too.
“The teens report cooking more at home, like cooking for themselves and their families," said Farley.
The 1 million-meal milestone comes as the nonprofit prepares for another change.
Since its founding in 2012, the Teen Kitchen Project has rented a separate office and kitchen.
In November, it’s moving into its own combined space.
“And so having that one central home base is going to be really important to help us kind of condense our operations and make us more efficient," said Farley.
And, she added, that will also allow them to serve meals to more clients.
The Teen Kitchen Project is one of KAZU’s many underwriters.
Canadians boycott California wine
Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., spoke about his recent trip to Canada at a Wednesday press briefing.
He said he hopes Canadian provinces will make an exception to their American alcohol ban to support the California wine industry.
“The president doesn't care a lot about what happens to California, he's only too happy to see California suffer economically," said Schiff.
"It doesn't really give Canada leverage."
Most provinces pulled American wine from shelves early last year in response to President Trump’s proposed tariffs.
Prior to the move, Canada was a top export market for wine produced in the U.S., most of which comes from California.
Schiff said that even if provinces do officially lift their bans, Canadian consumers are unlikely to end their boycott of California beverages any time soon.
