Moss Landing State Beach shooting
At least two people are dead after a shooting near Moss Landing State Beach early Monday.
First responders were called to Jetty Road just before 2 a.m. They found two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds who were declared dead at the scene.
Investigators learned of a third person with gunshot injuries who checked in at a local hospital. Their condition is unknown.
Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Andres Rosas says the danger has passed.
"At this time we do not believe that there is anybody that was related to this... that is still in this immediate area," said Rosas, "or that there was ever any threat to the surrounding community of Moss Landing."
State Parks Monterey District Chief Ranger Mike Dippel says the beach was closed at the time of the incident. The park has a gate at its entrance, but it’s routinely left open.
"People coming into this park wanna utilize (it) for fishing and surfing early in the morning, and we do not have staff to get out here at that time, so the gate was open," said Dippel.
The investigation is ongoing and the sheriff’s office did not identify anyone nor offer information about a motive.
Salinas Mayor's race
Salinas voters will choose a new mayor today. Four candidates are running: current mayor Dennis Donohue, student Hezekiah Gonzalez, retired educator Peter Szalai and construction worker Daniel Muñoz.
Also on the ballot is Measure H. A yes vote repeals four renter protections that are currently in effect.
Gonzalez, Szalai, and Muñoz all oppose the measure. They want to keep the protections. As mayor, Donohue voted to repeal the protections. But this election, he is not taking a formal position on the measure.
Santa Cruz, Marina, and Monterey are among the other Monterey Bay area cities electing mayors today.
