Allisen Corpuz speaks with members of the press after winning the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open.

After four challenging rounds of golf at Pebble Beach Golf Links, Allisen Corpuz won it all Sunday evening at the U.S. Women’s Open.

The 25-year-old from Hawaii is a graduate of the University of Southern California. She said the victory felt very unreal.

“This is a dream come true, and it was something I had dreamed of,” Corpuz said. “But at the same time… just never expected (it) to happen. So I'm just trying to take it in and enjoy the moment.”

In the fourth round, Corpuz had six birdies and three bogeys. She finished the day nine under par.

Corpuz takes home $2 million in winnings - the largest first-place purse in U.S. Women’s Open history. She also became the first U.S.-born player to win the tournament since 2016.

Mina Harigae, who grew up in Monterey and graduated from Pebble Beach’s Stevenson School in 2008, struggled in the final round of the tournament. Harigae had placed second in last year’s U.S. Women’s Open but finished the tournament on her home course in 33rd place at eight over par.

She made two birdies and four bogeys through the 17th hole. But it was on the 18th hole where things got sandy. Harigae hit her first shot onto the beach out of reach from the green. She chose to reshoot from the tee and earned a double bogey on the last hole.

Despite the tough finish, Harigae tried to remain positive.

“I'm just more disappointed,” Harigae said. “But you know what? I still got to play four rounds in front of the home crowd at Pebble.”

Unlike play on Saturday, the wind was minimal out on the course. According to the USGA’s course forecast, winds mostly stayed under 10 miles per hour.

Monterey native Mina Harigae finished her fourth and final round at Pebble Beach Golf Links this afternoon. Harigae struggled at points during the fourth round and had a double bogie on the 18th hole after hitting her first shot to the left of the green onto the beach. She finished the 2023 U.S. Women's Open eight over par overall and is tied for 33 place.

Harigae's husband, Travis Kreiter, was her caddie during all four rounds of the open. She said having him with her at Pebble Beach was special. "I mean, he loves golf way more than I do, so I know he enjoyed it," Harigae said. "Just to share the experience with them, it's just the best thing ever. We got to play in a U.S. Open in my hometown."

The weather on the third day of the U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble Beach Golf Links was the worst yet. While the skies were mostly clear of clouds, winds played a significant factor in play.

Southern California native and Stanford University student Rose Zhang said the winds significantly impacted her play.

“The winds were pretty high,” Zhang said. “And I knew that the ocean breeze was definitely causing the ball to go all sorts of places.”

Despite the challenging conditions, a few players were able to finish the third round with a few birdies. That includes Nasa Hataoka. The 24-year-old from Japan had by far the best round of golf of the day. She finished the round with six birdies and zero bogeys.

Hataoka is now -7 overall and is in first place. In a press conference after her impressive round, Hataoka said through a translator that her past experience helped her have such a good round.

Allisen Corpuz of Kapolei, Hawaii, finished the tournament's third day in second place. Corpuz had three birdies and two bogeys during the third round.

Corpuz was lost for words when pondering the potential of winning it all tomorrow. “I don't even think I could put it into words… but major first win. It would mean a lot,” Corpuz said.

Monterey’s own Mina Harigae also had a decent round despite the weather conditions and had three birdies and four bogeys during the third round. She finished the round +4 overall and is tied for 19th place.

Discussing how she’ll approach play during the fourth and final round on Sunday, Harigae said she’ll be making minimal adjustments. "Hitting fairways and greens is a premium, and I started to make a few more putts today... so more of the same," Harigae said.

Weather conditions for Sunday’s game are expected to be better. Pebble Beach Golf Links weather report forecasts winds to be under 12 miles per hour for most of the day.

When discussing green conditions on the course today, Harigae said it was really windy. "And not only that, it's (the) gusts," Harigae said. " So you get ready to hit certain yardage, and then the gusts (start)... and you're (then) 10-15 yards short."

Preparing for the fourth round tomorrow, Harigae said she won't be making any adjuments to her play. "Hitting fairways and greens is a premium, and I started to make a few more putts today... so more of the same," Harigae said.

Day 1 Recap - U.S. Women’s Open

Posted July 6, 2023 at 9:24 PM PDT

Today, the 78th U.S. Women’s Open kicked off at Pebble Beach Golf Links. Players were gifted relatively calm weather on a course that is notorious for strong winds that interfere with play. Winds, for the most part, did not exceed 15 miles per hour. But that is expected to change, with gusts forecasted to reach over 20 miles per hour over the weekend.

Monterey native and 2022 U.S. Women’s Open second-place finisher Mina Harigae had a rough start to her first round, getting three bogeys in her first five holes. She immediately bounced back with birdies on the sixth and seventh holes. Harigae finished the day two over par with 74 strokes. She’s tied for 39th place.
