The Timber Fire in Big Sur started last weekend, causing hundreds of residents near the fire to evacuate, and shutting down a 10-mile stretch of U.S. Hwy. 1.

An emergency evacuation shelter opened on Aug. 10 at the Carmel Middle School (4380 Carmel Valley Road, Carmel, CA 93923).
