April 20 (7:30 PM) and 21 (3:00 PM), 2024
Performances at Sunset Center, Carmel

San Carlos and 9th Ave.

Carmel/Monterey CA – Monterey Symphony presents two concerts on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 7:30 PM and Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 3:00 PM with the following works:

Adolphus HAILSTORK Epitaph to a Man Who Dreamed

Benjamin BRITTEN Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings
Arvo PÄRT Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten

VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Symphony No. 3, Pastoral

Concert five is titled Loma Prieta. Loma Prieta Peak is located just north of Monterey County, part of the Loma Prieta fault line that was the locus of the disastrous 1989 earthquake. At the center of this concert—like the center of the quake that disrupted so many lives, is music about loss. The April concerts will be dedicated to Steve Friedlander, Executive Director of the Carmel Bach Festival. Local poet Neal Whitman has written a new poem to commemorate these concerts.

“In this singular, transformative concert experience, the Monterey Symphony will present four pieces about saying farewell,” says Music Director Jayce Ogren.

“Hailstork’s Epitaph for a Man Who Dreamed is a moving tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr. Britten’s wistful Serenade features our superb Principal Horn, Daniel Nebel, as well as star tenor Sean Panikkar, who has sung at the world’s great opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera,” says Ogren.

Arvo Pärt's Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Britten is written in memory of Benjamin Britten. Finally, the centerpiece of the concert is Vaughan Williams Symphony No. 3, Pastoral. is a tribute to the beautiful landscape of northern France and the soldiers who died there during World War I.

It is an elegiac program, yet there is an ineffable beauty in each piece that breathes life into the spaces they inhabit.

Pre-concert lectures are included with the Symphony ticket and are held one before each performance in the main concert hall and last approximately 30-minutes.
