Musikiwest presents "The WolfganG" Strikes Again
Musikiwest presents everyone's favorite gang with Mozart's Viola Quintet in C major as the centerpiece for this glorious program. 18/under free admission.
This is a wonderful opportunity to encounter the WolfganG in the intimacy and great acoustics of SandBox. In this setting you won't miss a breath, a cue, a smile or goosebumps from either the musicians or the audience. It's really the best way to experience lve chamber music. Our program will start with John Corigliano's String Quartet Snapshot: Circa 1909 for string quartet. This work is inspired by a photo thet Corigliano saw of his father as an eight year old who became concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic for over a quarter century. It's a touching and moving remembrance. Then we share Movement III of String Quartet No. 4 of Philip Glass The "Buczak" It was commissioned by Geoffrey Hendricks in remembrance of the artist Brian Buczak, who succumbed to AIDS-related complications in 1987 at the age of 33. Glass wanted his fourth quartet to represent "a musical impression of [Buczak] as a person as well as a tribute to his life's work" It's a great way for Glass' many fans of his Days and Nights festival here in Carmel and Big Sur warm up for his 90th birthday year in 2027. We then dive into Jessie Montgomery's Strum for String Quartet. In Jessie's own words: "Drawing on American folk idioms and the spirit of dance and movement, the piece has a kind of narrative that begins with fleeting nostalgia and transforms into ecstatic celebration.".
All three of our composers in the first half of this program are living composers. It's safe to say that each of them was profoundly shaped by the music of Mozart making them each a member of the WolfganG!
Our final work of the evening is one of the 6 string Quintets Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed for two violins, two violas and cello. Quintet No. 3 in C Major, K. 515.
Made possible by a geneorus grant from The Pebble Beach Company Foundation, Musikiwest's super heros are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the El Sistema program in Watsonville in the days prior to this concert. We will explore the nature of positive collaborations through our open rehearsal process and coach the young musicians on technical aspects of playing their instruments. We will work with both the lower school and upper school programs!
