CSUMB’s Extended Education and International Programs -- International Education Week featuring a Virtual Screening and Screening / Q&A of the Documentary “Sonita”
International Education Week (IEW) is a national event promoted by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education that celebrates the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
This year, California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) celebrates IEW with four days of events showcasing cultures from around the world and honoring the diversity on our own campus. CSUMB hopes to shed light on the powerful role that international education plays in a university setting by empowering diverse thought, sharing cultural traditions and ideologies, and creating a welcoming and inclusive space for all people.
Highlights include special events ranging from international cooking contests to film screenings in celebration of International Education Week from November 15th - 18th. The featured event includes two film screenings of the Documentary “Sonita,” the second screening featuring a Very Special Question & Answer Session with the film’s Director, Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami and the film’s Star, Sonita Alizada.
The discussion will be focused on “The Importance of Education and Art on Women’s Life in Afghanistan”.

Hosting open community events is in keeping with CSUMB’s role as a community resource, providing forums for provocative discussions that can impact thought and action on issues important to our community.
“International Education Week is a great opportunity to celebrate CSUMB’s diverse campus and to honor cultures at home and around the world,” says CSUMB Dean John Binkley. “It is crucial for our campus community to be exposed to traditions, values and heritage outside our own scope, and to foster a welcoming and inclusive campus environment.”
