Food Not Bombs started in May 1980 in Boston by eight college age anti-nuclear activists. One of those co-founders, Keith McHenry lives in Santa Cruz.
Food Not Bombs grew from that small collective to a global movement sharing free meals and organizing for peace and social justice in over 1,000 cities in at least 70 countries.
The Santa Cruz chapter shared the only daily meal with the homeless every day for three years when the indoor meal programs were locked down during the COVID restrictions.
Booths at the festival are free to all community groups. Admission is also free to all.
