Transportation has long shaped the history and identity of the Monterey Peninsula. From stagecoaches and railroads to automobiles, scenic highways such as 17-Mile Drive, and internationally renowned motorsports, each new mode of transportation transformed how people experienced the region. This engaging local history lecture examines how the evolution of transportation influenced commerce, tourism, and the Peninsula’s distinctive character, offering new insight into the forces that helped transform Monterey and Carmel from coastal communities into destinations known around the world.

John Sanders is an Author, Storyteller, and Historian whose research has helped reshape the historical record of Hotel Del Monte and its lasting influence on the development of Monterey. During his 31-year career at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), he established an archives preserving the history of both NPS and Hotel Del Monte and shared that history with thousands of visitors through engaging presentations. His work uncovers overlooked stories about the Monterey Peninsula, including the origins of the 17-Mile Drive, the construction of Hotel Del Monte, and the region’s early transportation history.

John's most recent research, co-curated with Greg Berkin, explores Hotel Del Monte’s pioneering role in the automotive age and its influence on the development of California’s highway system.

AZA unites traditional Tamazight music, indigenous to the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, with the global influences of its diverse members. Evocative of Saharan-African blues, yet with an original style that truly defies categorization, AZA’s stirring performances feature deep, danceable rhythms, intricate string melodies, and soaring, soulful vocals.

The Evening features Sylvain Poirier, a talented Canadian Musician renowned for his soulful voice and deep connection to Quebec's rich cultural heritage. This Very Special Performance takes place on Saturday, October 17th at the Monterey History and Art Museum's Stanton Center.

Born and raised in the beautiful province of Quebec, Sylvain has spent many years immersing himself in its lively music scene, drawing inspiration for his artistry. His musical journey is deeply rooted in exploring traditional folk songs that reflect the region's history and stories, while also incorporating modern pop influences that appeal to contemporary audiences. The unique rhythms and melodies of Quebec's Music, enriched by a blend of cultural influences, have shaped his sound, allowing him to create a musical experience that is both authentic and innovative.

During this special evening, Sylvain will present the History of Songs in Quebec. Each song is not just a melody but a journey through emotions, memories, and the essence of Quebec itself. He will interpret early singers and share stories about the evolution of music from the 60s, 70s, and beyond. He tells tales of how Quebec singers traveled to France, inspired many, and returned with glory. Additionally, Sylvain will present his own compositions, showcasing his lyrical skill in both French and English.

This intimate concert promises to be a unique experience you will not want to miss, as Sylvain's captivating stage presence and heartfelt delivery will leave a lasting impression on all who attend.
