In today's newscast,

Monterey students take part in robotics competition.

This is York School’s 10th year participating in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Team Captain CJ Winter, a senior, said their robot had to handle foam balls. "This year we had to figure out how to intake the balls, store the balls, shoot the balls, and also go under the obstacles in the way," Winter said.

York School 8th Grader Veer Bajaj said the team built the robot with 3D printing and laser cutters. "We’ve put it all together, wired up the batteries and the Robo-Rio, which is the brain of our robot," Bajaj explained. "Then we would code the robot to be able to shoot."

Things got stressful at times, but overall, the team had a good run. And Sky Brown, a junior, encouraged more students to try robotics.  "Just try new things," she said. "I know that can be so scary, and it’s like the stereotypical advice everyone gives you, but it’s the best way to go about it."

York School is one of KAZU’s many underwriters.

Proposal to prohibit federal immigration operations on state property clears first hurdle.

Democratic state lawmakers are pushing a measure that would make state property off-limits for immigration operations.

Shiu-Ming Cheer with the California Immigrant Policy Center, who co-sponsored the bill, told our newsroom partner CapRadio that immigration raids are taking a toll."This has heightened fear among local residents who are avoiding particular areas and sometimes not going out at all, " Cheer said.

The measure passed the Assembly Judiciary Committee this week and now heads to the governmental organization committee.
