Proposed train service could connect San Luis Obispo to the San Francisco Bay Area for the LA Olympics
A new, proposed train service could connect San Luis Obispo to the San Francisco Bay Area—in time for the 2028 Olympics.
Kendra Hanna from our news partner KCBX spoke to Pete Rodgers, the executive director of the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments.
He said the idea for the new rail service is in its early stages. It was inspired by the upcoming Summer Olympics, scheduled for 2028 in Los Angeles.
“We think people will be coming from all over the world — without cars — to see the Olympics," Rodgers said. "And, they're not just gonna want to see the Olympics when they come to California. They're gonna want to go to the Bay Area. They might want to go to Yosemite.”
The proposed service would launch in June of 2028 and run for three months.
The idea is that riders would be able to take the Pacific Surfliner from LA to San Luis Obispo.
Then, they could transfer to the new pilot service, which would take riders through Salinas and as far north as Oakland.
They estimate the service would cost approximately $15 million.
Rodgers said that money could be secured through a future state bill to fund parts of the Olympics, or possibly through a federal earmark.
