In today’s newscast:

Speaker endorses Xavier Becerra for California Governor

California Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas has endorsed a candidate for Governor.

On Tuesday morning, Rivas, whose district includes parts of Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties, announced his support for Xavier Becerra.

Fourteen other members of the Democratic caucus also endorsed Becerra’s campaign.

Becerra is a former California Attorney General and also served as U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary in the Biden administration.

National Library Week

Public libraries around the region are marking National Library Week. The theme this year is “Find Your Joy.”

The Santa Cruz Public Libraries will be hosting screenings and discussions of the film The Librarians. The documentary looks at how librarians are pushing back against censorship.

One screening will be at the Scotts Valley Branch on Wednesday evening and another at the Capitola Branch on Thursday evening.

For Hillary Theyer, the director of Monterey County Free Libraries, the importance of libraries goes beyond books.

“We are the safe place to ask for many, many people,” Theyer said. “You can come in and ask anything, and we're gonna do our best to help you. Even if that is referring you to the best agency that can help you.”

Theyer encourages people to use the library’s free resources, including adult literacy programs and  online veterans assistance.

“ We serve everyone, all ages, all stages in life.”
