Mee Memorial Hospital in King City hasn’t had a Labor and Delivery unit for six years. But, since then, family medicine doctors with additional training in obstetrics have stepped in to help pregnant patients in South Monterey County get prenatal care. That's helpful, but most still must travel to Salinas to give birth.

Since South Monterey’s only hospital, Mee Memorial, closed its labor and delivery unit 6 years ago, most families travel to Salinas to deliver babies. And demand for local maternal care exceeds what the area's clinics can provide.
