The ship that took a biologist and novelist from Monterey to the Gulf of California 85 years ago is about to recreate the journey.

Cal State Monterey Bay students are on board the boat that carried author John Steinbeck and his friend Ed Ricketts, a biologist, to the Sea of Cortez thanks to the Western Flyer Foundation. It deploys the Western Flyer to blend science and art, stir curiosity, and introduce students to ocean science.

The Western Flyer is the fishing boat John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts took on their famous expedition in 1940 to the Sea of Cortez. Now, after nearly a decade of restoration, the Western Flyer is back home in Monterey.
