As of Monday morning, more than 4,000 people in the U.S. have tested positive for COVID-19, including nearly 500 in California, according to Johns Hopkins University. KAZU News recently spoke with former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, who’s lived most of his life in Carmel Valley, about the coronavirus outbreak.

The economic effects of the coronavirus are not just reflected in the plummeting stock market. Visitor dependent Monterey County is already feeling the squeeze. You just have to spend time in a tourist area to see the impact.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends the use of cloth face coverings, especially in hotspots of the coronavirus. The state of California also recommends the use of face coverings, which can be homemade.

All Californians are under orders from Governor Gavin Newsom to stay home in light of the coronavirus. Santa Cruz County and Monterey County health officers have extended their shelter in place orders for local residents through May 3.

KAZU News has learned more about the quarantine of some Grand Princess cruise ship passengers in Pacific Grove.

Asilomar Conference Grounds

According to the California Office of Emergency Services, up to 24 passengers from the Grand Princess cruise ship, currently docked off Oakland, will be quarantined in Pacific Grove. They'll stay at a cluster of buildings on the Asilomar State Beach and Conference Grounds.

Over the last few days, Santa Cruz County officials confirmed that two community members have tested positive for COVID-19.

A Santa Cruz County resident has tested positive for COVID-19. According to County officials, the resident had previously traveled on the Grand Princess cruise ship from San Francisco to Mexico.

There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Santa Cruz or Monterey counties, but local health officials are still preparing. Twelve counties in California have reported cases of the virus. On Wednesday, the first death occurred in the state.
